  • Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham, LLP names new Partner. Steven J. Olsen, has been named a Partner at the law firm of Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham, LLP, effective January 1, 2017.  Mr. Olsen graduated from Valparaiso University School of Law, summa cum laude, as its 2010 valedictorian; he earned a Masters of Business Administration, beta gamma sigma, from Valparaiso University; and was the top graduating student from the University of Central Missouri where he earned his B.S.B.A. in Marketing and Management, summa cum laude.  He was admitted to practice law in Indiana in 2010, the same year he joined Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham as an associate, and was admitted to practice law in Michigan in 2011. Mr. Olsen concentrates in corporate law, real estate law, and employment law. He also serves as the primary attorney at the firm handling trademark, copyright, and internet law matters. Prior to pursuing a legal career, Mr. Olsen’s past vocations included being an adjunct professor, a marketing and promotion consultant, and a business manager. Throughout Mr. Olsen’s practice, he has published legal scholarly articles, presented legal education courses, spoke at various civic engagements, served on non-profit boards, and volunteered for charitable organizations. In addition, Mr. Olsen continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor of Business Law at Goshen College.   • National Federation of Paralegal Association (NFPA) elects Secretary and Director of Operations. Cherylan Shearer, has been elected the NFPA Secretary and Director of Operations, serving a two year term ending in 2018. Ms. Shearer is a corporate paralegal at the law firm of Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham, LLP in Goshen, Indiana, and has been with the firm for 22 years.  She received her paralegal certificate with honors in June 1999 from Indiana University at South Bend.  She works with the initial set up of organizations including for-profit, nonprofit, and limited liability companies, maintains corporate compliance for approximately 500 clients of the firm, and focuses on mergers and acquisitions. Ms. Shearer has been a member of the Michiana Paralegal Association since 1999 and is also an Affiliate Member of the Indiana State Bar Association.  While a member of her local Association, she has served as Membership Chair, Primary, and as President. She also served as the NFPA Region III Director from 2009 through 2012, as Chair of the Region Directors from 2010-2012, and Convention Coordinator for 2013-2014.  Most recently, she served NFPA as the Secretary and Director of Operations for 2014-2016. Since 2009, Ms. Shearer has taught the Paralegal Methods in Business Organization seminar to paralegal students at the Indiana University at South Bend.  In March 2014, she also presented a webinar for NFPA on Basics of Corporate Structures for Paralegals.  She was also awarded the Michiana Paralegal of the Year for 2010. The Secretary and Director of Operations will be responsible for taking minutes at official NFPA meetings and oversee the daily operations of the association through the Management Company. NFPA is a non-profit professional organization representing 8,000 paralegals and is headquartered in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Maxson, has joined the law firm of Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham, LLP as an associate attorney.  Maxson graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School, cum laude, in 2016 and graduated from Trine University, summa cum laude, in 2011 where she earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration in Accounting. While completing her law degree, Maxson taught financial and managerial accounting to undergraduate students in the Mendoza College of Business.  She also served as an editor and application coordinator for the Journal of Legislation.  Prior to attending law school, Ms. Maxson worked in private accounting. Maxson will concentrate her practice in areas of transactional work.   • John D. Ulmer received the 28th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award from the Indiana Trial Lawyers Associations (ITLA).  This prestigious award, presented at the ITLA  Lifetime Achievement Seminar, in Indianapolis, recognizes Ulmer’s contribution to ITLA, his many achievements for his clients, and his impact upon the legal profession.  The Lifetime Achievement Award is an acknowledgement by Ulmer’s peers of his contribution to the practice of law, the quality of justice, and to the constitution of the State of Indiana. The Award recognizes an attorney who has devoted a lifetime of distinguished service to the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association and is a recognition of exceptional dedication to the preservation of the rights of the injured. Ulmer, an attorney with Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham, LLP, where he practiced full-time for more than 50 years and continues to serve as an attorney of-counsel, engages in general trial work, with an emphasis on personal injury litigation.  He earned his B.A. with honors from Michigan State University in 1960 and received his J.D. with distinction from Indiana University School of Law-Bloomington in 1963.  During law school, he was on the Board of Editors for the Indiana Law Journal.  Ulmer served from 1965-1969 as a deputy prosecuting attorney for Elkhart County and then later was appointed in 1980 to act as a special deputy prosecuting attorney on the Ford-Pinto trial.  Ulmer represented District 49 in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1998 to 2008.  He is a member of the Goshen City Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association. He previously served as a member of the Indiana State Bar Association Board of Managers and as chairman of the Civil Rights Law Committee.  Ulmer served on the Indiana Commission for Continuing Legal Education from 2009-2015 and on the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission/Indiana Commissioners on Judicial Qualifications from 2012-2014.  He is a member and past state chair of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been a member of the Board of Directors for the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association since 1987. Ulmer has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for both business litigation and personal injury litigation and has been named an Indiana Super Lawyer since 2011.  He has lectured for the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Forum and previously served as a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy. Ulmer has authored a number of legal articles on various pretrial and trial subjects.   • DRI Governmental Liability Committee Newsletter published August 7, 2015, edited by Nathaniel Jordan. Twice each year, the Governmental Liability Committee of DRI, The Voice of the Defense Bar, publishes a newsletter of legal articles, circuit case updates, and committee news.   • Governor Pence names Bodie Stegelmann Goshen City Court Judge.  Governor Mike Pence named Bodie J. Stegelmann as Goshen City Court judge.  “With nearly two decades of criminal and civil law experience, Bodie Stegelmann has the expertise and passion necessary to serve Hoosiers as well as Goshen City Court.” Pence said.  Stegelmann is a Partner with the Goshen, Indiana law firm of Yoder, Ainlay, Ulmer & Buckingham LLP, where he is primarily engaged in business planning and real estate law and advises various local government bodies. From 1994 to 1998, Stegelmann worked as an Elkhart County deputy prosecuting attorney. Richmond, J.D., has joined the law firm of Yoder Ainlay Ulmer & Buckingham, LLP as an associate attorney.  Richmond graduated from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 2014 and graduated from Purdue University in 2011 where he earned his B.A. in History and a minor in Political Science.  While in law school, Richmond was named to the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law Order of the Barristers in 2012 and competed in the National Health Law Moot Court Competition in 2013.  Richmond also coached the Indiana University Robert H.
